Your CLAT Rank vs Your NLU Reality: What No Coaching Institute Will Tell You (2027)

CLAT Rank vs NLU Reality infographic — Mega Law & G.K. guide covering cut-off trends, rank vs college comparison, and smart CLAT strategy tips.

Your admission score determines which institutions are genuinely within reach — not which ones look good on a coaching brochure. A General category score of 500 puts NLSIU and NALSAR outside realistic reach in most years. A percentile position of 2000 is not failure — it means RMLNLU Lucknow, CNLU Patna, and NLU Odisha are serious, achievable targets. This guide breaks it down category-wise, round-by-round, with the honest numbers coaching institutes rarely publish.

Every year, somewhere around December, thousands of students open their CLAT scorecards and face a decision that shapes the next five years of their life — often with the worst possible advice in their ears.

Coaching brochures say “top NLU guaranteed.” WhatsApp groups say “any NLU is fine.” Nobody gives you the one thing you actually need: an honest, merit-position breakdown of which institutions you can and cannot realistically target.

I have counselled over 4,000 to 5,000 students for CLAT and AILET over 17 years. The single biggest waste I have seen is students filling their NLU preference order based on brand perception instead of cutoff data. The student who declines GNLU because it “sounds smaller” — that is a five-year mistake built on bad information.

This post gives you the actual picture. No brochure language. No vague assurances.

“In 17 years of counselling CLAT aspirants, I have never seen a student who made their NLU preference order based on real cutoff data regret it. The students who regret it are always the ones who went by name recognition alone.”

What Your CLAT Rank Actually Means

Your result in CLAT is a percentile position among roughly 70,000 to 90,000 students who appear for the exam each year. It is not a score out of 120. Every NLU fills its seats from the top of that queue downward.

The confusion starts because CLAT scores are compressed. One mark equals roughly 100 to 200 positions in the competitive band between 60 and 100. A student who scored 98 out of 120 might sit around position 50. A student who scored 92 might be at position 600. That four-point gap on paper is a 550-position gap in the queue — the difference between NLSIU and NLU Jodhpur in most years.

Every passage question missed in the English section or every GK question skipped can shift your institution options by two or three universities. That is the context you need before looking at any cutoff table.

NLU Cutoff Ranks — Category-wise Approximate Ranges (Recent CLAT Cycles)

These are approximate closing position ranges — the merit number at which the last seat gets filled for that category. If your score falls within this range, you have a realistic shot. Always cross-reference with the official Consortium of NLUs website (consortiumofnlus.ac.in) before submitting your preference order, since figures shift every year.

NLU Tier General (Closing Rank) OBC SC ST
NLSIU Bangalore Tier 1 ~50–100 ~120–180 ~250–400 ~400–600
NALSAR Hyderabad Tier 1 ~180–280 ~300–450 ~600–900 ~900–1,400
WBNUJS Kolkata Tier 1 ~280–420 ~450–620 ~900–1,200 ~1,200–1,800
NLU Jodhpur Tier 1 ~420–600 ~620–850 ~1,100–1,600 ~1,600–2,400
GNLU Ahmedabad Tier 2 ~550–750 ~800–1,100 ~1,400–1,900 ~2,000–3,000
HNLU Raipur Tier 2 ~750–1,100 ~1,100–1,600 ~2,000–2,800 ~2,800–4,000

Important note on NLU Delhi: NLU Delhi does NOT accept CLAT scores. It conducts AILET — a completely separate exam. If NLU Delhi is your target, your CLAT preparation alone is not enough. See megalaw.in/ailet-exam/ for full preparation details.

What No Coaching Institute Tells You About NLU Cutoffs

These are the five things that actually determine whether your merit position translates into a seat — and most coaching institutes either do not know them or do not say them because they complicate the sales pitch.

Cutoffs are year-specific, not fixed

A position that got someone into GNLU in 2024 may not work in 2027. Exam difficulty, total applicants, and score distribution all affect where the threshold lands each year. Any coaching institute that gives you a fixed number without this caveat is telling you what you want to hear, not what you need to know.

Multiple counselling rounds change everything

Many students secure their target institution in Round 2 or Round 3, not Round 1. First-round thresholds are almost always more competitive than final figures. Students who accept offers in Round 1 from lower-preference universities vacate those seats in later rounds. Do not withdraw from CLAT counselling after Round 1 without understanding this fully.

Your home state NLU has a separate state quota

Every NLU reserves a significant portion of seats — usually 30 to 50 percent — for students domicile in the state where the NLU is located. These seats fill at significantly more relaxed thresholds than open merit seats. If RMLNLU Lucknow is in your home state, your competition for those seats is a fraction of what the general table shows. Most UP students never check this and miss a real opportunity.

Programme preference affects your seat

Most NLUs now offer B.A. LL.B., B.Com. LL.B., and B.B.A. LL.B. programmes. B.A. LL.B. is usually the most competitive. Being flexible on the programme opens additional options within the same institution at a merit position where the B.A. LL.B. seat is already filled.

Available seats and reachable seats are not the same number

An NLU may advertise 120 seats. But 40 are reserved categories, 10 are NRI or foreign national, and 12 are home state quota. The General category open pool may be as small as 50 to 55 seats. That changes your score-to-institution math significantly — and almost nobody does this calculation before filling their preference order.

Category-wise Reality Check

If you are from a reserved category, your institution map looks fundamentally different from what the General category table shows.

OBC category students

OBC students typically see threshold relaxation of 30 to 50 percent compared to General category. A merit position of 800 in the OBC category can get you into an institution where the General category threshold closed at 500. The relaxation varies by NLU and by the specific reservation percentage mandated by that state.

SC and ST category students

SC and ST students see the most significant threshold relaxation — often 2x to 4x compared to General category closing positions. An SC student at position 2000 may have access to universities that closed at position 700 to 800 for General category. This is reservation policy under constitutional mandate, and it is a genuine competitive advantage to use strategically when filling your preference order.

Specially Abled Persons (SAP) category

SAP category has its own reservation quota at most NLUs. Thresholds here are further relaxed, and the number of applicants competing within this category is significantly smaller. This is a consistently underutilised category where students often have more options than they realise.

5 Mistakes Students Make When Reading NLU Cutoffs

These mistakes cost students real opportunities every CLAT cycle.

  • Using Round 1 figures as the final word.Round 1 is the most competitive round. By Round 2 and Round 3, thresholds often drop by 100 to 300 positions as students who accepted better offers vacate seats. Never finalise your strategy based only on Round 1 data.
  • Confusing overall merit position with admission position.CLAT releases an overall merit number, but your admission position within a category and programme can differ. Always check the category-specific merit standing before assessing your eligibility.
  • Ignoring the home state quota. If you are from Uttar Pradesh, RMLNLU Lucknow has reserved seats for UP domicile students filling at significantly relaxed thresholds. Most UP students see the open merit figure, assume they are out of range, and never check the state quota data. That is an avoidable miss.
  • Treating all Tier 2 NLUs as equivalent.GNLU Ahmedabad and HNLU Raipur are both often labelled Tier 2, but are not equivalent in placement outcomes or faculty strength. Research the specific institution’s track record using NIRF Law Rankings (nirfindia.org) before listing it.
  • Ranking by prestige name instead of verified data.Your preference order should be driven by cutoff data, category analysis, and home state quota — not by which institution name you have heard more often in conversation.

How to Build Your NLU Preference Order Using This Data

Here is the exact framework to use when filling your preference order on the CLAT counselling portal (clat.ac.in).

Step 1 — Find your realistic target zone

Using the cutoff table above, identify which NLUs have closing positions within 200 of your score in your category. Those are your primary targets. Institutions where you need 400 or more positions of improvement are aspirational — list them, but do not build your entire preference order around them.

Step 2 — Check your home state quota

Find which NLU is located in your home state and add it to your list even if the open merit threshold looks out of reach. State quota data is available on individual NLU websites. Do not skip this step.

Step 3 — Build a three-tier list

Divide your NLU list into three tiers: Aspirational (where you need your best-case score), Realistic (where your actual score is within the cutoff range), and Safety (where your score is comfortably above the threshold). Your preference order should be top-loaded with aspirational NLUs and heavily weighted on realistic ones.

Step 4 — Fill every slot

The CLAT counselling portal allows you to list preferences across all participating NLUs. Fill every slot. An empty slot is a wasted opportunity. Counselling allotments move seat by seat, round by round, and every preference position you leave blank is a seat chance you have given up before the round even begins.

What Each Rank Bracket Actually Means

Beyond the cutoff table, here is a plain-language summary of what each bracket realistically translates to for General category students.

Position 1 to 200

NLSIU Bangalore and NALSAR Hyderabad are both realistic targets. These are the top two law schools in India by most credible measures. If you are in this range, list them first and second in your preference order without hesitation.

Position 200 to 600

WBNUJS Kolkata and NLU Jodhpur are your primary targets. Both are top-tier institutions with strong placement records and established alumni networks. The mistake in this bracket is either aiming only at NLSIU and being disappointed, or settling well below what your score can achieve.

Position 600 to 1500

GNLU Ahmedabad, HNLU Raipur, and RMLNLU Lucknow are all solid options in this range. This bracket is the most prone to preference order mistakes — students here often either aim too high across the board or settle at institutions well below what their score can actually secure. Use the data table, not gut feeling.

Position 1500 to 5000

CNLU Patna, NLU Odisha, NLU Assam, and other newer universities are achievable targets. These institutions have produced strong alumni in corporate law, civil services, and academia. Do not dismiss them based on tier labels or brand perception alone — research their actual placement records and judge on data.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which NLU can I get with a score of 500?

With a General category position of 500, you are typically in contention for NLU Jodhpur in later counselling rounds, and GNLU Ahmedabad as a primary target. NLSIU and NALSAR require positions under 200 for General category and are outside your range at 500. For OBC candidates, position 500 puts WBNUJS Kolkata within reach. For SC/ST candidates, NALSAR and WBNUJS are both realistic targets.

How many NLUs accept CLAT in 2027?

As of 2027, 24 National Law Universities participate in CLAT counselling. NLU Delhi conducts a separate exam called AILET and does not use CLAT scores for admission. Check consortiumofnlus.ac.in for the complete updated list.

Does category significantly affect NLU cutoff positions?

Can I get into a top NLU with a position of 1000?

A General category position of 1000 puts you outside the top 5 NLUs in most years. Realistic targets include HNLU Raipur, RMLNLU Lucknow, CNLU Patna, and NLU Odisha depending on your category and the specific year. If you have home state quota eligibility at one of the Tier 2 institutions, your options may be better than the open merit threshold suggests.

What is the home state quota in NLU admission?

Most NLUs reserve 30 to 50 percent of their seats for students who are domicile residents of the state where the NLU is located. These seats fill at significantly relaxed thresholds compared to open merit seats. Check each NLU's official website for their specific state quota policy and eligibility conditions.

When is the CLAT 2027 exam date?

CLAT 2027 is expected in December 2026. The Consortium of National Law Universities typically announces the date 6 to 8 months in advance. Check consortiumofnlus.ac.in for confirmed dates. See megalaw.in/clat-2027-notification-exam-date-registration/ for everything published so far.
